TELEVISION WHO?

Where does the ‘television’ you consume come from?

During my spare time as a kid, you would find me either fixed onto a television screen, yelling at a fox to stop swiping, or I’d be playing outside with my neighbours. I grew up watching channels like Nickelodeon, Disney channel and Cartoon Network on Foxtel, but I stuck to my favourite Nickelodeon shows like icarly, Drake and Josh, Spongebob Squarepants and many more shows. I would always get upset when my Dad changed the channel to Airline crash investigations, oh how i hated the power of the remote.

Television is a medium that allows millions of people from all over the world to gather around and interact with in a way to see their common interests with television. We have become familiar with television throughout the years and how it has evolved, from black and white to coloured which we now only watch in. We went from changing channels and the struggle to make it back in time during commercials to online streaming like Netflix, Stan and many more.

Some popular American TV shows like ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ and ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-air’ are found on Netflix as they have been widely popular throughout Australia and other countries. As most of you know Netflix comes out with series too, some of my favourites are ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Black Mirror’. The main difference between the two services is that Netflix places a big emphasis on TV shows, while Foxtel is more focused on providing the latest movies on demand and exclusive live sports.

Nowadays some people seem to forget about television since the online streaming apps are so easy to use, we can all watch it through our phones, laptops and tablets. However the majority still buy smartTV’s, I bet you have one in your living room or bedroom. Netflix is where I mainly watch TV series, because you don’t have to wait another week for the next episode like on Foxtel.

The show I’ve been hooked onto recently is called ‘Peaky Blinders’, Peaky Blinders is a global televisions crime/drama series that is set during the 1920’s at Birmingham, England, created by Steven Knight and produced by Caryn Mandabach. The Peaky Blinders is a family of gangsters that, sew razor blades in their peaked hats hence ‘Peaky Blinders’. They are very ambitious and cunning with their fearless, stern boss Thomas Shelby, the aftermath of World War 1 has impacted them severely, mentally and physically. The men that came back from all that conflict were devastated and so there was this huge societal change where you had all these men who witnessed in the war in the scale that we never would’ve imagined. Due to that Tommy lost all faith with religion and establishments, he seems to turn all the trauma into this relentless ambition because he could’ve died at any point during the war so he’s treating his life as a “why not” phase. However, he still thrives to keep his family safe by putting himself in dangerous situations. I Instantly got captivated with this TV series because it has an amazing storyline with rich characters that have a real depth played by quality actors and the time it’s set in really gives it a historical feel. Totally recommend watching if you like Victorian crime/drama crime shows.
